Family Tree

My mom started an online family tree recently - I put a link to it over on the right side of the page. I've added several generations to the Tone, Spafford and Torrence branches, more to follow...

Daniel's Life Before the War

There's a gap in Daniel's life prior to his Civil War service. At the time his service began, he lived in the Cambridge NY area. After the war, he returned and lived out the remaining 54 years of his life here. Unfortunately, his mother and (supposed) sister do not appear in the local cemetery records. There's 2 possibilities:

- Margaret and any other family members moved away from Cambridge during their lives (possibly during his service?)
- The Harrington emigrants settled elsewhere upon arriving in the US, and Daniel made his own way to Cambridge.

Before the advent of modern transportation, it wasn't feasible to travel very far from home on a regular basis. I think it's more likely that a guy looking for work would have left to go find it, rather than his sister and mother hitting the road, with a child in tow. However, being new arrivals, anything is possible.

So far nothing has turned up on anyone who made the trip across the pond with him. Cross referencing the cemetery records in the county for another child of William and Margaret H. turned up nothing. It's believed they arrived at a port in New England (not NYC), and captains were required to provide passenger lists upon arrival. Many of these still exist, and are slowly becoming available. So we may find out more details soon.

Daniel's bio

Just the facts:

- Born May 30, 1834, Ireland (presumably in Cork) to William and Margaret
- Arrived in the US when still a young boy, with his mother and possibly a sister, name unknown
- Served in Company D of the 22nd NY Regiment during the Civil War, from 1861-63
Married Rachel Clement in Hebron, NY on Nov. 10, 1863, and they had 5 children:
Clement D.
Preston M.
Edwin D.
Annie E.
Alice M. Winslow
- Died August 19, 1917 in Cambridge, NY - buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Salem NY

Daniel was wounded at the 2nd Battle of Bull Run on August 30, 1862. He served out the remainder of his 2 year call of duty.

Daniel and Rachel, along with a few of their children, and several other people in the family tree, are interred at Evergreen Cemetery.

Welcome

And...I've decided to finally (yeah, I know) tackle this daunting project head on.

I decided the most efficient way to catalog the findings would be thru a blog...with several surnames, and so many branches, keeping track of the information will be much easier in digital format - rather than shuffling thru piles of scribbled notes and papers.

A family tree will be put together soon, I'll link to that when I get it up and running.

So here goes...any suggestions on improving format and layout are greatly appreciated!
